The JCC of Mid-Westchester has been a
proud participant of the JCC Maccabi Games
® for
over a decade! |
The
JCC Maccabi Games ®
have been offering a life-and personality-shaping
experience to Jewish teenagers since 1982. At this Jewish Olympic style
event, each athlete has the chance to participate in one of 14 sports in
events spanning the week-long experience, creating memories that will last a
lifetime. The JCC Maccabi Games
®
can be called the Olympics for Jewish teens,
but they serve a larger purpose than athletic competition. The Games also
promote community involvement, teamwork, and pride in being Jewish. The
Games are the largest Jewish teen event in the world – each summer over
6,000 Jewish teens participate in the Games. Over 100,000 teens have
benefited from the JCC Maccabi Games
®
since 1982. The energy and excitement
make it a unique and unforgettable experience for every participant, from
athletes to volunteers, from coaches to host families.
"On
the field", teens compete in basketball, baseball, bowling, dance, golf,
gymnastics, in-line hockey, karate, soccer, softball, swimming, table
tennis, tennis, track & field, volleyball and more...
"Off the field", the excitement continues with trading pins, t-shirts and
jackets. Evening social activities, including barbecues, Israeli night,
amusement parks, zoos, host family night, parties and dances, encourage
interaction among athletes.
All athletes participate in a unique "Day of Caring, Day of Sharing",
independent from their competition to do a hands-on community service
project that might involve working with special needs children, serving a
meal at a homeless shelter, or cleaning up an inner city park.
Maccabi Movement
The Maccabi Movement began in 1895 when the first all-Jewish sports club was
formed in Constantinople. The first world Maccabiah Games were held in
Israel in 1932. This 2 week international competition takes place every 4
years and has featured many world-class athletes over the years, most
notably: Mark Spitz (swimming), Mitch Gaylord (gymnastics), Ernie Grunfeld
and Danny Hayes (Basketball), Brad Gilbert and Dick Savitt (Tennis).
From swim teams to basketball leagues for youth and adults, JCCs have been
the place where the Jewish community has come for competitive and
recreational sports for more than 100 years. The First North American
JCC Maccabi Games ®, an annual, week-long, international, multi-sport,
athletic and cultural event that unites Jewish teens, was held in 1982. Due
to overwhelming Interest, Regional Games were added in 1985 to augment the
even-year Continental Games. For more information on the Maccabi
movement, visit the web sites of the four partners involved.
